Join us for the BlackStar Film Festival Opening Night Reception.

Mingle with filmmakers, artists, special guests, cinéastes, and community supporters for a special evening kicking off the 7th Annual Festival.

Music will be provided by DJ HVNLEE, Vikter Duplaix, Mike Nyce, plus special guests. The evening will be hosted by Laiya St. Clair.

Admission is free but RSVP is required by July 31 at 11:59pm EST. Please note that registration doesn’t guarantee admission, which is permitted on a space-available basis.

DJ HVNLEE has established herself as one of Philly’s fastest up and coming DJs, spinning her way into the heart of the city with her immense love for music. Since 2013, when she stepped on to the scene, she’s been taking control of crowds, spinning them into multiple genres, as she introduces new music to her patrons. Coming up in a male dominated industry DJ HVNLEE aspires to inspire women across the city to follow their passion and define a path for themselves. HVNLEE is not just a DJ, she’s a revolution of the modern woman in business and in music, building relationships across the city and bringing people together one song at a time.

DJ Mike Nyce is no newbie. He’s been rocking crowds for 20+ years. Being able to be diverse is where Mike’s talents are at their peak. He offers patrons and listeners a musical journey with an ease that some seem to stumble through. He’s shared sets with Dj’s Jazzy Jeff, Cash Money, Q-Tip, Dj Premier, Pete Rock, Questlove and more. He’s toured the country with Doug E Fresh and Biz Markie, has been the resident Dj for Philly’s infamous 12 year (weekly) party, Tastytreats, spun for Prince and his private afterparties and so much more. This is one Dj that you cannot go wrong with. From Hip-Hop to Reggae, Soul, Classics, Rock and more – this is one Dj that will definitely keep your party rockin’.

Laiya St. Clair


Laiya St. Clair is a DC native who grew up in a family of musicians and music lovers. She received her bachelor’s from ​Clark Atlanta University​ and started her professional radio career at ​WUSL (Philadelphia). ​​She then moved on to ​WPHI (Philadelphia), where she obtained her own specialty show, Sunday Morning Soul, before becoming a producer on Monie and Pooch in the Mornings, which 4 months later became, Monie, Pooch, and​ Laiya in the Morning. Additional radio stints include work at WPGC (Washington, DC) and Hot 107.9 (Philadelphia). Her television appearances include ​CN8, Fox, The CW, Doctor Oz Show​, and ​HuffPost Live. She hosted ​Music Choice’s Essence Fest Turns 20! ​TV special and was featured in a spot on ​The Source Magazine​’s “Power 30 In Radio” for 2014 and 2015. She’s produced several independent media projects and served as a consultant for Visit Philadelphia. You can now hear Laiya weekly on ​Pandora Radio​’s premiere talk show, Questlove Supreme, for which she also serves as producer.

Vikter Duplaix


Vikter Duplaix is an award-winning/critically-acclaimed producer, artist, DJ, and event curator. His sought-after sonic stylings have moved bodies and souls at countless nightlife experiences around the globe. His DJ sets cover a wide range of global dance classics from past to present and from genre to genre. One of his event creations, Kiss-N-Grind, became a staple in the Los Angeles social stratosphere and subsequently has grown to become a national nightlife brand. Wherever a Duplaix experience exists, a great time is surely had by all.
