In the Wake
In the Wake (working title) is a meditative quotidian drama focused on the interior life of the family of a once glorious movement leader. The project will examine what life is like for the children and families of major cultural figures. What do they leave in their wake? Through the world of the film, I am seeking to examine the legacies of the political activism of the 1970s—specifically those concerned with Black liberation—and the resultant experience of neoliberalism, the drug wars, class strife, and ideological shifts in progressive movements.
In the Wake will be written and directed by Maori Karmael Holmes, a curator, filmmaker and writer, who founded BlackStar in 2012 and serves as its CEO and Artistic Director. As a director, her works have screened internationally including her feature documentary Scene Not Heard: Women in Philadelphia Hip-Hop (2006). She has also directed and produced works for Colorlines.com, Visit Philadelphia, India.Arie, and Mike Africa, Jr. Maori received her MFA in Film & Media Arts from Temple University and her BA in History from American University.
