Cheryl Dunye
Cheryl Dunye is a Liberian American filmmaker who emerged from the queer new wave of the 1990s. She made history as the first out Black lesbian to direct a feature film with The Watermelon Woman (1996), winner of the Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival. Known for her “Dunyementary” blend of documentary and fiction, Dunye interrogates race, sexuality, and authorship. She is currently developing her next independent feature, Black Is Blue.
